Today, we continue our drive out west. But first, we stopped to visit the gateway to the west – the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. We did not go up into the arch as I heard that it’s not that great plus the smoke from the Canadian wildfires made the air very hazy.
After visiting the arch, we headed west again. Our route took us right through Kansas City so I could not pass up the chance to get some authentic Kansas City BBQ. I think I enjoyed it more than the rest of the family.
At Kansas City, we turned north to head to Sioux Falls, SD which is in the southeast corner of South Dakota. Our route took us through Missouri, into Kansas, and the back and forth along the border of Iowa and Nebraska until we crossed into South Dakota. This is an amazing drive and you get to really experience the “fruited plains” of America! I really enjoyed the scenery on this drive.
Sioux Falls – I love it here!!! I kept joking with the girls that we are going to move here. There was not a lot of traffic (by the way, the highway speed limit is 80 mph) and the town was beautiful. It was so nice walking the streets of the town.
We went to a park here called Falls Park which is built around the Big Sioux River and there are waterfalls there. It was so nice walking around this park. And you can climb the rocks of the waterfall so you know that’s what we did. I cannot speak highly enough about this park and how nice it was. We spent a couple of hours there and then walked Main Street in the evening to go on the “Sculpture Walk”. The city has artists display there art sculpture all along Main Street. You can view them, purchase them, or vote for your favorite. It was pretty cool to see all the sculptures (over 50) – some as big as 15 feet while others only a foot or so. I’ll be sad to leave here, by alas, our real adventure starts tomorrow so time to go back to the hotel to get some sleep.
